Highly anticipated Texas backup quarterback Arch Manning stepped in after Quinn Ewers' injury, and the No. 2 Longhorns' offense didn’t lose momentum in a commanding 56-7 victory over UTSA on Saturday night in Austin.
Manning impressed, throwing for 223 yards and four touchdowns, along with an impressive 67-yard rushing score. It was his most extensive playing time at the college level after Ewers left in the second quarter due to an oblique muscle injury.
Ewers appeared to suffer the noncontact injury while completing a 49-yard pass to tight end Gunnar Helm early in the second quarter. He remained in the game for one more play before exiting. After heading to the locker room, Ewers returned to the sideline dressed in street clothes just before halftime.
The redshirt junior quarterback threw for 185 yards, completing 14 of 16 passes with two touchdowns and one interception against UTSA.
Manning entered the game with 12:19 left in the second quarter and went on to complete 9 of 12 passes in the dominant victory. On his very first snap, he hit wide receiver DeAndre Moore Jr. for a 19-yard touchdown.
The 6-foot-4, 225-pound redshirt freshman showcased his athleticism on the following drive, evading a defender with a zone read and sprinting 67 yards for a touchdown. It was the longest run by a Texas quarterback since Vince Young's in 2005.
Manning led the team into halftime with a 28-7 lead, then extended it with a 51-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Bond, a 75-yard bomb to Ryan Wingo, and a 12-yard strike to Johntay Cook II early in the fourth quarter, concluding his night.
The Longhorns scored on five of the nine drives he commanded, racking up 614 total yards at an average of 9.2 yards per play.
"It makes a difference when you have talented players and great coaches around you," Manning said. "Isaiah Bond, Ryan Wingo, the offensive line—they all performed really well. They make my job a bit easier."
Manning, the nephew of Eli and Peyton Manning, son of former Ole Miss receiver Cooper Manning, and grandson of Archie Manning, appeared in two games during his redshirt season with Texas in 2023. The highly touted former five-star recruit threw his first career touchdown pass in the season opener against Colorado State but had only 11 pass attempts at the college level before Saturday's game.
"There's definitely a lot to work on and areas to grow," Manning admitted. "But I’m glad I got out there, took some hits, and got back into the feel of the game."
Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian said Ewers’ injury is still being evaluated but added that it doesn't appear to be a serious fracture.
"Quinn seems to be in good spirits," Sarkisian said. "I spoke with him on the sidelines. He was playing some of his best football, so I’m hoping this isn’t something long-term. We need all our healthy players for the journey ahead."
Texas finishes its nonconference slate next Saturday against UL Monroe before making its SEC debut at home against Mississippi State on September 28. After a bye week, the Longhorns will face their rival Oklahoma in Dallas on October 12.
Ewers, Texas' starting quarterback for 25 games, missed two games in the 2023 season due to a shoulder injury and sat out three games in 2022 with a severe SC joint sprain.
After leading Texas to a Big 12 championship and a College Football Playoff berth last season, Ewers decided to return for another year rather than enter the NFL draft, aiming to win a national championship. Behind Ewers and Manning, Texas has just one other scholarship quarterback, true freshman Trey Owens. The four-star recruit made his debut against UTSA, completing 2 of 4 passes for 19 yards.
"Because Quinn's been through it and I think because those other injuries he got with the shoulder were so structural and they were contact-type injuries, I think he's probably in a little better spirits," Sarkisian said. "We've got to do everything on our part to get him as healthy as we can as quickly as possible."
Heading into the weekend, Ewers was the clear Heisman Trophy frontrunner, with odds of 5-1 according to ESPN BET, following a performance in which he threw for 246 yards and three touchdowns in a blowout victory over No. 10 Michigan. However, after his injury on Saturday, his odds shifted to 18-1, while Manning's chances saw a significant boost, dropping from 150-1 to 16-1, as reported by ESPN BET.
Meanwhile, Miami quarterback Cam Ward emerged as the new Heisman favorite at sportsbooks, with ESPN BET listing him at 5½-1 on Saturday night.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Backup quarterback Marcel Reed shined in his first college start, contributing to three touchdowns as Texas A&M rolled past Florida 33-20 on Saturday, potentially marking coach Billy Napier's last game with the Gators.
Reed, stepping in for injured starter Conner Weigman, threw for two touchdowns and added a rushing score, leading the Aggies to their first road victory in almost three years. Texas A&M (2-1, 1-0 SEC) snapped a 10-game road losing streak with the win.
